Day 483 - The masks are coming off, except when I'm at Walmart, for now...

It has been raining for the better part of two weeks.  The sun came out yesterday so Number 2 and I slept on the deck and decided to bring the dog out with us.  He did well until about 2 am, which is when he aggressively vomited at the foot of my bed.  All I could do was pat his back like a little baby.  Being 2 am, I was not about to get up and clean it up, (we were outside after all).  Not surprisingly, there is no evidence of said puke this morning but I will still wash all the bedding, (which cuts into our Friday Fun Day).  Even if it was all a dream, the linens have a slight moldy aroma from all the rain.  The damp cotton smell mixed with pollen, sweat, and dirt reminds me of summers up north at my grandparents' house when it got so hot and humid, we had to sleep outside.  Although, it seems like there were more lightning bugs back then.   I am writing today because I stopped reading a book that I have wanted to read for a whi...

Day 337 - Pandemic Staycation

Today was the first day we all started our pandemic staycation.  I sat on the couch drinking coffee for way too long this morning because I stayed up late watching Firefly Lane like a twit.  I hated every second of it but couldn't look away.  I am so glad it is over but I cannot wait to find out if there will be a second season to see how far they go off the rails with the storyline, (which is already quite a bit different than the book s).   I am not sure what this week has in store for us.  We will ski, maybe snowmobile, do a whole lot of resting our brains if not our bodies, and try to reconnect as a family.  It is hard to vacation connect when you are home and the kids can retreat to their rooms.  Maybe we will have a bonfire or go to the beach. A friend of mine, (who recently moved closer but I can't visit because of frigging covid) and I try to chat on the phone once in a while in the wee hours of the morning while we are walking our dogs b...

Day 161 - Pandemic Existential Crisis

It was the beginning of summer, my husband was working from home, I started working three full days, the kids transitioned from remote learning to each taking a Vlacs course, so I decided to take another crack at finishing my degree online.  It sounded all so progressive, romantic even.  It felt like I was pulling off something a superhuman blogging mom would do.  Winning! It sucked.  I thoroughly enjoyed the learning.  I did not enjoy teaching myself or the logistics of the class itself.  It felt like simply navigating through all the moving parts was a full time job and it occupied all my spare time and energy.  Being who I am, I assumed that A. It was my fault and B.  I would get better at it.  Wrong! My second class just started and I was all pumped to write a paper on the failed Equal Rights Amendment when I had an epiphany.  Actually no.  That isn't right.  I started the class, got extremely confused, panicked, doubted m...

Day 28 More coffee

If there is one thing I have definitely improved since the quarantine, it is my coffee skills.  I thought I had mad skills to begin with but I have now upgraded to a new level!  I developed severe coffee snobbery in college when I worked at a coffee shop, (way before being a barista was cool).  I drank it black, I drank it hot or cold, I drank it with shots of espresso in it and on the side.  I drank it all day, up until bedtime without disturbing my sleep in the least.  When I was in college, I worked three jobs.  Coffee was my life.  It was the only way I could function at such a high level of productivity.  Above all else, I HAVE ALWAYS AND WILL ALWAYS LOVE COFFEE. My daughter once told me I should switch to tea because it is so much better for the environment.  It takes less water and land to grow and more of it is sourced from fair trade farmers.  I'll have to look into the truth of all that to be sure.  In the meantime, I ...
